UN summit LIVE: Truss begins mission to reset ‘special relationship’ ahead of speech today

Liz Truss will address the globe this evening from the UN general assembly in New York.

It is understood she will say the UK under her premiership will be an “active defender of our democratic values”.

She is expected to emphasise the work Britain has already done to support Ukraine and vow continued support to counter authoritarian regimes.

It comes after UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres warned the world is in “great peril” in his opening speech.

Major concerns Mr Guterres highlighted included: the war in Ukraine, climate change and the continuing COVID-19 pandemic.
